New analytics engine, group by day, chart click-throughs, and more

New analytics engine, group by day, chart click-throughs, and more

Dec 31, 2024

In this last release for the year 2024, we've added some of the most requested features. We've introduced more clickthroughs to the charts and enabled daily grouping. We've added a search box to the charts modal, which allows searching for charts and reports templates.

We're thrilled to introduce our new analytics engine, Analytics 2, which opens a new chapter in our user-friendly productivity analytics. It also means It's time to say goodbye to the dashboard functionality.

Read on to learn what's new in Screenful!

Screenful Analytics 2 is now generally available

While we haven't made much noise about it, we have been working on our new analytics backend, Analytics 2, for quite some time. It is a complete rewrite of our data warehouse, data model, data retrieval algorithms, and APIs.

When we started the work on Analytics 2, our goal was to create the most flexible and scalable backend for project management data. That means faster loading of charts and the ability to tackle the more advanced analytics cases that weren't possible with our previous analytics engine. We have already released some features based on Analytics 2, such as the time tracking reports and tracking work based on custom date fields, and there's more to come.

We'll be deploying Analytics 2 to all accounts gradually during Q1 2025.

Click-throughs in number chart and bar charts

We've added more click-throughs to our charts. You can now click through from Number chart and Bar chart. When you click a chart, a modal is shown listing the items that were used to calculate the number. The columns in the list are automatically selected based on the selections you've made in the chart editor so that you'll see the most relevant details for each item.

As an example, if you have selected a custom field as the unit for the chart, the click-through list will also show the same unit:

Likewise, if you have a chart showing the total amount of hours logged for a project, the click-through list shows the time logged per each item:

Daily grouping in charts

So far, you have been able to group charts by week, month, or quarter. We have now added day as option. You can see it by going to the chart editor and selecting a chart type that supports grouping by time (bar, stacked bar, multibar).

For example, if you want to see how many tasks were created per day, you use the configuration below. In the Group by menu, you can pick day as the grouping option:

And here's the resulting chart:

Search charts and templates

You can now search for templates when creating a custom chart. When you click Add new chart, the modal that lists available templates has a search box:

When you type keywords, the list of templates is adjusted accordingly.

The search is not limited to templates. When editing a report, and you want to add a new chart to the report, the same modal is used for listing the available charts. You can use the search feature to search your existing charts:

That can be handy if you have a large number of custom charts created in your account!

Sunsetting the Dashboards product

We are excited to bring you advanced analytics capabilities with our new Analytics backend. Over the last couple of years, we've completely rebuilt our analytics engine. We now have industry-leading analytics capabilities to introduce in the coming months and years. Unfortunately, that also means saying goodbye to the features that the new architecture won't support. Starting Jan 1st, 2025, the Dashboards features and plans are no longer supported. You can learn more from the blog post.
